Neurotherapy: What Is It?
Neurotherapy
is a technique in which we train the brain to better control and
regulate a wide number of issues. By training the brain, much as you
train your body through physical exercise, we can help your brain learn
to function better. You can think of neurotherapy as a very focused kind
of behavior modification therapy.
Ask us if neurotherapy is appropriate for you
or your child. How Can Neurofeedback
Therapy
Help?
- Neurofeedback training can improve sleep patterns. When you sleep
more efficiently, you are more alert during the day.
- Neurofeedback therapy can help with
anxiety and depression, and with syndromes like migraine or chronic
pain.
- Neurofeedback therapy can be helpful in managing attention and can
achieve remarkable results for children with attention deficit disorder
(ADD) or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).
- Neurofeedback training can even help you manage emotions. If the
over-emotional behavior is a problem, it's reassuring to realize that
neurotherapy can help. If there's a problem with inadequate emotional
response, for example lack of empathy, that can also be helped with
neurotherapy.
- There are other issues where neurotherapy doesn't actually eliminate
the problem, but rather reorganizes your brain to function better in the
context of that issue. In this sense, neurotherapy is helpful for
autism, stroke, seizures and traumatic brain injury.
Finally, there are some specific issues where the EEG neurofeedback
training can be helpful, such as in cases of seizures, traumatic brain
injury, stroke, and autism. In these instances the training does not so
much get rid of the problem as it simply organizes the brain to function
better in the context of whatever injury or loss exists.

What’s a Neurofeedback Training Session Like?
Neurofeedback training is a learning
strategy that enables you to actually change your brain waves. When you
have information about your brain waves presented to you, you can learn
to change them. Your neurotherapist is like a personal trainer for your
brain.
A neurofeedback training is painless and
non-invasive. One or more sensors are placed on the scalp and one on
each ear. Your brain waves are displayed to you in the form of a video
game or other video display, including sound. You control the video game
entirely with your brain. As desirable brain activity increases, the
video game moves faster, or you achieve some goal in the game. As
undesirable brain activity occurs, the game responds negatively.
Gradually, your brain responds to the cues of the game and brain wave
learning occurs.
Neurofeedback therapy sessions last from
40 minutes to an hour, and are usually done from one to five times per
week. Some improvement is usually seen within the first ten sessions.
Once goals have been reached, the benefit seems to be permanent in most
cases.
Neurofeedback therapy can
make a dramatic difference for some people. Contact the Parsippany
Counseling Center to find out if it can help you or your child.
