What Does a Child Advocate Do?

If you are considering requesting special education services for your child or if your child already receives special education services, you and your child have many rights. However the rules regarding special education services are complicated. A child advocate is thoroughly versed in the ins and outs of what school systems may provide, and what they must provide by law. A child advocate is also in a position to represent your interests to the school system from a firm position of knowledge and strength.

Some accommodations can be expensive and school administrators may prefer to encourage less expensive alternatives. An effective child advocate can help you understand whether those alternatives will effectively meet the needs of your child. And if those alternatives aren't adequate for your child's needs, the child advocate will help you to obtain the services that are adequate and fully address the needs of your child.
